To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing on July 20, 1969: the Moon Museum. Moon Museum is a small ceramic wafer three-quarters of an inch by half an inch in size, containing artworks by six prominent artists from the late 1960s. The artists with works in the "museum" are Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Forrest Myers and Andy Warhol. This wafer was supposedly covertly attached to a leg of the Intrepid landing module, and subsequently left on the moon during Apollo 12. The moon museum is considered the first Space Art object. While it is impossible to tell if the Moon Museum is actually on the moon without sending another mission to look, technicians have admitted to placing personal effects onto the Apollo landers, hidden in the layers of gold blankets that wrapped parts of the spacecraft which remained on the moon after the astronauts departed. There are six artworks located on the ceramic tile, each one in black and white only. Starting in the top center is a single line by Robert Rauschenberg. To its right is a black square with thin white lines intersecting, resembling a piece of circuitry, by David Novros. Below it is John Chamberlain's contribution, a template pattern which also resembles circuitry. In the lower middle is a geometric variation on Mickey Mouse, by Claes Oldenburg, a popular motif for the artist at that time. Forrest Myers created the work in the lower left, a computer-generated drawing of a "linked symbol" called "Interconnection". Finally, the last drawing in the upper left is by Andy Warhol. He created a stylized version of his initials which, when viewed at certain angles, can appear as a rocket ship or a crudely drawn penis. The concept for  MoonMuseum was brainstormed by sculptor Forrest "Frosty" Myers. He stated that "My idea was to get six great artists together and make a tiny little museum that would be on the moon." Myers attempted several times to get his project sanctioned by NASA. He claims the agency gave him the runaround and, (story continued in comments below) #AndyWarhol   #RobertRauschenberg   #ClaesOldenburg   #ForrestMyers   #DavidNovros   #JohnChamberlain

At this moment, exactly fifty years ago, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first humans ever to land on the moon. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s call to action, the moon launch and landing seemed an impossible goal when first announced in 1962 in his speech at Rice University:⁣ ⁣ “We choose to go to the Moon,” Kennedy said. “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.”⁣ ⁣ Seven years later this goal was achieved, and the Apollo 11 moon landing became the most broadcasted event of its time, bringing previously unimaginable images and ideas into the homes of millions of people. ⁣ ⁣ Robert Rauschenberg, after attending the launch of Apollo 11 at Cape Kennedy, created the “Stoned Moon Series,” currently on view at Craig F. Starr Gallery. In this series, Bob summarizes all aspects of the space flight from launch to recovery, illustrating the ecology, technological complexity, romanticism, and humanity of one of the greatest moments in American history. ⁣ ⁣ This is the final week to view 𝘙𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘙𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨: 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯 1969-70, open Monday-Friday through July 26. ⁣ #RobertRauschenberg   #Rauschenberg   #Apollo   NASA @RauschenbergFoundation⁣ •⁣ Rauschenberg, “Cover Page, Stoned Moon Book,” 1970. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing on July 20, 1969: the Moon Museum, which included drawings by David Novros and Claes Oldenburg, is thought to be the first artwork to have traveled to the moon. American sculptor Forrest Myers worked with scientists from Bell Laboratories to produce an edition of tiny ceramic tiles onto which drawings by him and five other artists were inscribed. He reported that he had one of the tiles covertly attached to the Apollo 12 spacecraft and that it was left on the moon along with other personal effects transported by the astronauts. Myers contributed the drawing at the lower left. Warhol drew his initials, which also read as a penis or a space rocket. In the top center is a line by Rauschenberg; to its right is a black square by Novros and a diagram by Chamberlain, both modeled on circuitry diagrams; and in the lower center is a sketch of Mickey Mouse by Oldenburg. #MoonMuseum   #DavidNovros   #ClaesOldenburg   #ForrestMyers   #AndyWarhol   #RobertRauschenberg   JohnChamberlain . . . On this day 50 years ago, the Apollo 11 mission took one giant leap for mankind by landing on the moon. Having watched the launch from Cape Canaveral, Robert Rauschenberg began a series of lithographs documenting his musings on the historic event. Nodding to the connection between the surface of the moon and the surface of the lithography stone, the body of work became known as the Stoned Moon Series. This work and two others in the series are on view now in our current exhibition Robert Rauschenberg at Gemini G.E.L.: Selected Works 1969-2000. . -Sub-Total, 1972, 3 color lithograph #apollo   #apollo11   #robertrauschenberg   #geminigel   #StonedMoon

Reposting @pacegallery — Fifty years ago today, on July 20, 1969, half a billion people watched as the Apollo 11 mission beamed back to earth the first television footage of American astronauts on the moon—a groundbreaking moment that dramatically influenced the history of images and expanded the bounds of human perception. - To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (@metmuseum) presents "Apollo’s Muse: The Moon in the Age of Photography." On view through September 22, the exhibition features more than 170 visual representations of the moon from the dawn of photography through the present in the exhibition, including RobertRauschenberg's "Untitled" (1969) solvent transfer drawing, pictured here. - Peering through passages of gouache and watercolor are spectral portraits from the press of aerospace engineer Von Braun, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and a numbered diagram of the cast of characters in Norman Rockwell’s artwork “Behind Apollo 11 (1969),” which was printed in the July 15, 1969 edition of Look Magazine. In a brilliant nod to this big step for mankind, Rauschenberg even traced his own foot onto the paper, leaving his footprint on art history for years to come.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landings, when man first walked upon the moon. “Moon Museum,” a tiny ceramic chip containing inscribed drawings by Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Forrest Myers, and Andy Warhol, made its way to the moon onboard the Apollo 12 mission. Conceived of by Forrest Myers, the proposal of carrying art into space was never officially approved by NASA, and as a result the chip was secretly attached to the leg of the Intrepid lunar lander and smuggled on the spacecraft. Although the original’s present whereabouts is unconfirmed, the chip is the first art object to reach the moon and brought the works of six seminal contemporary artists to outer space.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ …⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image courtesy of the Museum of Modern Art⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ …⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #RobertRauschenberg   #DavidNovros   #JohnChamberlain   #ClaesOldenburg   #ForrestMyers   #AndyWarhol   #spaceart   #Apollo12   #MoonMuseum

We're celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing by spotlighting Robert Rauschenberg's iconic mixed-media piece "Skyway." Made for the 1964 World's Fair and featuring imagery related to the Kennedys' Camelot and the Space Race, "Skyway" captures a mythical era in American history through its most recognizable pop culture icons. Look closely to also find imagery of floating astronauts and spinning planets. 🌔 A free spotlight tour on this piece is available today at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Each tour is limited to the first 30 attendees. . . image: Robert Rauschenberg, Skyway, 1964, oil and silkscreen on canvas, Dallas Museum of Art, The Roberta Coke Camp Fund, The 500, Inc., Mr. and Mrs. Mark Shepherd, Jr. and General Acquisitions Fund, 1986.8.a-b, © Robert Rauschenberg Foundation . . #Apollo11   #moonlanding   #Apollo11anniversary   #DallasMuseumofArt   #RobertRauschenberg   #Skyway   #Artstagram

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic July 20, 1969 moon landing, The Rauschenberg Foundation is comemorating the Stoned Moon project (1969-70), that consist of 20 drawings and two prints by Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008). At NASA’s invitation, Rauschenberg traveled to Cape Canaveral in July 1969 to witness the launch of Apollo 11, the first manned spaceflight to the moon’s surface. The experience culminated in the creation of thirty-four Stoned Moon prints (1969-70), a Stoned Moon Drawing (1969), and a suite of nineteen collages and drawings for Stoned Moon Book (1970). A fully illustrated catalogue is in production and will be available in late July. The publication will feature the unpublished, rough draft essay Michael Crichton (1942-2008) wrote on Rauschenberg’s Stoned Moon projects.

50 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. Among the millions watching was the artist Robert Rauschenberg, who had been invited to witness the launch by NASA. He was given detailed scientific maps, charts and photographs of the launch, which formed the basis of the 'Stoned Moon Series'. This series of prints celebrates man's peaceful exploration of space as a 'responsive, responsible collaboration between man and technology’. The combination of art and science was something that Rauschenberg pursued throughout the 1960s. This particular print, ‘Tilt’, was donated to the Gallery in 2009. 🔹️Chuck Close:Portraits🔹️ These are Chuck Close's colorful,mosaic-like portraits of his friends, including the artists 1️⃣Roy Lichtenstein,2️⃣Agnes Martin,3️⃣Robert Rauschenberg, and 4️⃣Lora Simpson. These works thrive on tension-betwleen part and whole, figuration and abstraction, the disciplined order of the grid and its exuberant infill.A rigorous method allows Close to see his subjects and translate their likenesses onto canvas. He begins with photography, capturing his sitter on camera and then selecting one picture to subdivide into discrete units. In a process that takes many months, he uses the gridded image as the basis for a corresponding painting. These portraits are particularly notable because Close has difficulty recognizing faces; he is face-blind. As the works presented in this gallery attest, exploration of artistic identity and participation in an art community are vital to Close. These larger-than-life portraits not only render images of fellow artists but also enter into dialogue wrth their shared techniques and breakthroughs, which include innovative uses of the grid, the individual mark, and photography, An episode that severely impaired Close's arms and legs in 1988 increased his desire to paint colleagues, as well. As he recalls,"The other group besides my family and close personal friends who showed up for me in the hospital... was the art world, and I realized that it was the other family" #art   #modernart   #chuckclose   #roylichtenstein   #agnesmartin   #robertrauschenberg   #lorasimpson   #abstraction   #figurativeart   #photography   #mosaic
