This is an old misconception with the idea that static stretches will somehow help to loosen up and avoid injury with activity. There is value in the static stretch and for some cases is essential but needs to be considered in context of the activity for that day. . . So where does static stretching fit into a program? In the instance that there is a true length deficit (rare) of a specific muscle following a warmup and exercise cycle the muscle will be more prepared for lengthening in a static position. Once finished with the stretch it is important to following that up with an active movement to reinforce the changes made in the length. . . . Movement Myth Monday! . . . The Myth we are addressing today is the timeless thought that static stretching needs to be done before a workout. This is an old misconception with the idea that static stretches will somehow help to loosen up and avoid injury with activity. There is value in the static stretch and for some cases is essential but needs to be considered in context of the activity for that day. . . So where does static stretching fit into a program? In the instance that there is a true length deficit (rare) of a specific muscle following a warmup and exercise cycle the muscle will be more prepared for lengthening in a static position. Once finished with the stretch it is important to following that up with an active movement to reinforce the changes made in the length. . . .
