Intrusive Thought: “I’m going to push her over the balcony.” ⁣ ⁣ I had difficulty picking an “appropriate” and “non offensive” intrusive thought I have had in the past. ⁣ ⁣ Because intrusive thoughts are just that...controversial, aggressive, violent, sexual, uncomfortable, and completely untrue.⁣ ⁣ Mine usually revolve around ugliness or violence towards others or myself.⁣ ⁣ Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts are usually the exact opposite of how we really feel - which is why they get so much attention by a brain prone to anxiety. ⁣ ⁣ We try to correct them, justify them, argue against them — leading to an internal battle with only uncertain answers. ⁣ ⁣ You are not your intrusive thoughts. You are not alone in experiencing them. And they mean absolutely nothing about you as a person.

Are you moving your beautiful body enough? Moving it doesn’t necessarily mean the gym, the track, or the triathlon. Yes, it can! Just keep in mind that it also means that morning stretch, walking to your favorite cafe, jogging the block, doing a few sit-ups and push ups, trying that plank exercise, visiting the yoga studio, hopping in the pool, and so much more. One of my greatest body hacks is moving every morning, and also doing some form of movement for 5-25 minutes every afternoon. Years back, to get my energy in a good place for the second half of the day, I thought I needed an afternoon coffee to keep me moving, but the truth is all we I needed to do was quite literally to START MOVING. Get some air, do some squats, bring a pair of shorts and take a brisk walk/ jog, sit-ups on the medicine ball, flow on your mat - whatever! When we move we release those much needed endorphins, our feel-awesome neurotransmitters, which gives us a natural boost of energy and elevated emotions. It’s a lot harder to be anxious, depressed, and sad when you keep taking care of your body by moving through this epic life we’ve been given. Do you stop and give gratitude for where you are? The pit stop before gratitude is mindfulness. Life moves fast and if we don’t take small moments to be mindful, to breathe, to soak in our surroundings, we will burn out. Not only will be burn out, but we will miss the beauty and joy in the small moments. So often we hear people late in their lives saying that if they could go back in time, they would have more gratitude for the moments they were in and the people around them. We get so caught up in looking at where we need to be, we forget to soak in where we are and what we have. Challenge yourself to take those moments to be mindful. Take a big nose to belly breath and look around you. Give gratitude for your mind, your body, your community and your life. Even on the worst days, life is a gift. And the best days? Well you definitely don’t want those to pass you by without soaking them in. #OwnYourAnxiety  

“ I should have finished school by now” “ I cant start a new program at this age” “ Everyone around me is engaged and I haven’t found my person yet” “ If I want kids by 30, I should have met someone by now” “ I want to travel but I have to have my shit together” I could name hundreds more sentences like this that I hear ALL the time. Life is hard enough without constantly placing these timelines on ourselves! Don’t feel guilt that you aren’t where you want to be in this moment. Define what you want, find your path & trust the process. Comparison is the killer of joy. Don’t compare your life to the lives of others because your goals, values & timeline are not the same as theirs! Who knows, they may be envying where you are at too. The only person you should ever compare yourself to is you. If you are becoming a better version of yourself everyday, YOU WILL get that job, find that person, meet that goal, live that dream.

About your teacher: Stacey Louise 💙 . When I first met yoga, I was experiencing anxiety. I had heart palpitations; a racing mind that was unable to focus; digestive disturbances + I was a hot, sweaty mess- literally. One doctor told me I had anorexia (I definitely didn’t!); another told me I had a heart condition & needed surgery (nope); the third opinion was an Indian doctor who told me I needed to attend yoga because I was anxious. (I was later correctly diagnosed with hyperthyroidism - which sped up my metabolism leading to those symptoms, yes- including anxiety) . Practicing yoga took me back to my love of dance, but instead of being out of breath, I was able to move WITH my breath. I instantly loved it & practiced almost every day for 5 years before stepping onto the teacher’s mat for the first time 14 years ago. . I always knew I’d work with children. I started off studying to be a primary school teacher, then shifted into children’s television production with the vision to write a children's TV show to teach kids how to move their bodies & think positive. . . Years after I stopped working in network TV, I fulfilled my dream with the release of the kids yoga series “Light Up Little Lights” with @muyogameditation which screens on @fmtv_official . My days are filled with sharing Yoga with kids as young as two, right up to teens, with the focus on teaching them about anxiety & ways they can feel safe & calm. . In a couple of weeks I’ll be facilitating another teacher training so that there are more quality, authentic & heartfelt kids yoga teachers guiding kids to be more calm, courageous and compassionate. . Next year I’ll be launching 2 new programs for teachers/ coaches/ healers/ parents/ OTs/ allied health who specifically want to learn how to teach kids to befriend anxiety in the classroom, medical setting, at home or in the yoga class. . Often anxiety comes from a lack of alignment between our actions and our values. The fear of the unknown is intense and can easily have you questioning if you are on the right path. At the end of the day, we cannot truly feel centred and be our best selves until we define what “our best” looks like. We cannot determine our goals and plans without first determining our driving values. Without determining our values, it is easy to become overwhelmed by all the areas we feel we are falling short. Defining our values provides more specific areas of focus that we can improve and build upon to create a clear, purposeful life. To define your values, break your life into key pillars. Family. Health. Relationships. Career. Spirituality Community. Ask yourself what matters to you. How will you live in alignment with what matters? The fewer you can narrow it down to, the easier it will be for you to lean into those values in all aspects of your life. #OwnYourAnxiety  

Lately I have been feeling off. Anxiety has been high, motivation has been low and I have been doing my best to curve depression whenever it creeps in. Seeing people eat delicious Thanksgiving meals with their families and significant others while I was at home eating Mr.Noodles alone had me feeling really low. I felt depression creeping in- low energy, the constant “about to cry” feeling, throwing myself a pity party. I allowed this pity party to last one day and then decided to do what I could. I talked about how I was feeling so that it would stop having power over me. Thankfully I did because then my friend dragged my ass to the gym and I immediately felt better. I know first hand how debilitating mental illness can be but you HAVE to push through if you want to get through it- no matter how hard it seems in the moment. It may be as simple as going for a walk, giving gratitude, eating healthy, cutting coffee on days you are anxious, talking about your feelings, getting a hug. Life is always going to throw shit your way- control what you can, let go of the rest. In no way am I minimizing these feelings or saying that one action will fix them because I know how untrue that is. However, small simple actions taken over time can help us to better combat the lows life throws at us.

Over 15 years ago, while reading books in this same section of @chaptersindigo that inspired me to be a better person while manoeuvring school which I was super behind in, running side businesses which I excelled in, and trying to just understand all that comes with “growing up” I used to sit in this same place reading and learning. Today is World Mental Health today. Ten years ago, this day probably wouldn’t have crossed my mind twice. But like many of you, my journey is ever evolving. While I had very mild anxiety throughout university, it did not impact me more than when my mom had her stroke almost two years ago. Being the only child and the only decision maker on her behalf, it was a lot for me to absorb at twenty-five years old. Not only did I have to rush through learning about strokes, stroke rehabilitation, I had to think about the tasks my mom was now leaving for me to take care of- bills, a mortgage, house maintenance, groceries- things I took for granted when she was still capable of doing these things. Almost two years later, I still feel the after affects of the whole ordeal. From travelling from one hospital to the next, to rehab, to appointments in between, to modifying her house so it would be functional for her to use, I wonder how I did it all. But I did it. After reading Own Your Anxiety by @julianbrass one tip that really keeps me going is to continuously give gratitude. Despite everything that has been thrown into my journey, I’m still here. I did it. It was fucking hard and it really tested my faith, but I’m here. My mental health is important- and for you who may be reading this, yours is too! Despite it all, I’m thankful I have my mom! It’s another holiday that I get to spend with her. It’s another birthday, another Mother’s Day I still get to have her. Although she may never return to her old physical self, I give gratitude that I still have her. And that’s all that matters. Today is World Mental Health Day. Take care of yourself- your heart, your soul, your mind, and everything else that falls in between.

Life can be hectic. Fast moving. And Anxiety inducing. Remember that fantastic nose-to-belly breathing tool? Make sure you make moments throughout your day to re-center, re-direct and re-gain gratitude. This can be by taking a moment to be silent throughout your day or giving yourself a few more minutes in the morning to self center. #OwnYourAnxiety  

Do you ever wish you could give yourself a break? You may not associate your striving, high achiever behaviour with anxiety. After all we tend to relate it to shyness, confidence issues and social angst. You, on the other hand, can often feel confident. You have moments of truly believing in yourself. Yet you are never truly satisfied. You are good, but never good enough. This is a type of anxiety that I am all too familiar with. It manifests as an inability to be content with the way things are. When things are going well I feel uneasy and complain that it's boring! I am always looking to the future, thinking that it will bring me the peace I crave (it never does 😂). . It can also manifest as guilt, especially when you're not being productive, or worse, not working to the best of your ability. You're constantly in competition with yourself. Some days I don't think this way of being is all that bad, it can feel like a superpower. It certainly helps me to meet my goals. But it is also exhausting. I am working hard on feeling 'good enough' and on giving myself breathing space without the guilt. It takes work and practice. As always, it's a work in progress. My time in therapy training (and in therapy itself) helped me to be a bit easier on myself and enjoy life. I'd love to help you get there too. The more I have spoken out about my mental health, the easier it has gotten. At first, it was really daunting because on top of the stigma and the shame, I truly feared that people wouldn’t understand. I remember opening up about depression and people being so confused. Hearing things like “but you’re always laughing” or “you don’t look depressed” were hurtful because it made me feel like I had to justify something that I didn’t even feel comfortable talking about in the first place. So many people put on a brave face and hide their pain behind a smile or a laugh. So many people still get up and get ready and push themselves to show up even though they feel absolutely broken inside. Never judge a book by its cover. Check in on people around you and if they say they are okay but don’t sound okay, check in again. You never know who is hurting and you never know the difference you could make on someone else’s day. #bravewithb   #mentalhealthawareness  

Happiest when I know there’s quality hummus coming my way. Was so surprised and delighted to discover a new Tel Aviv-inspired vegan restaurant (with multiple locations) during my short stay in Warsaw. If you didnt know, several years back I moved to Tel Aviv. It was an incredible experience where I did tremendous spiritual learning across the country but that’s not all I learned about. I also learned A LOT about .... HUMMUS. And how to make a crazy good batch myself. Bet you didn’t know that hummus is actually an anxiety-owning food. 𝘼𝙣𝙭𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮. Have you experienced it before? ⠀ You know that feeling you get before doing a presentation or going to an important interview? The stress before your final exam?? Stress is a normal reaction of the body. However, if it builds up and that feeling of worry and fear seems to not go away, then it can really affect you in a negative way. ⠀ I just finished reading “How to Own Your Anxiety” by @JulianBrass two days ago and I highly recommend it if you are going through these feelings in your life right now. I’ve had encounters with anxiety on multiple occasions and I think it’s so important to talk about it. In this book, Julian Brass is showing us how to understand anxiety, accept it and live with it. He talks about the body, mind and soul while offering 99 tips that you can incorporate in your daily life in order to OWN your anxiety. I have personally started implementing some of his tips into my lifestyle and they have been very effective. ⠀ Our phones and social media still remain a big source of anxiety for a lot of people. One of the tips he recommends in his book is to charge your phone in a different room and keep it away from your bed. Put it away at least 30min before falling asleep and stay away from your phone at least 30min from the moment you wake up. This chapter has taught me to find other things to do with that time such as: meditate, read a book, go for a walk, etc. Seriously, just this simple thing is a game changerrrrr. ⠀ Another favourite tip is: spending time with fur babies. Human-animal interaction is literally an anxiety pill!! And guess what?  74% of pet owners have reported mental health improvement from owning a pet! During some of my dearly loved eye-twitching, chest-thumping, pits-dripping, butterflies-in-my-stomach anxiety bouts over the years, think: about to go on stage, running late for a flight, you know the good stuff like that ... do you know what’s helped me SHIFT my anxiety? Spread love. Do it now! Sometimes we forget that when we spread love it makes us feel better too. It can help us get in the drivers seat of our anxiety and it can also just feel so good to give love. This is something I talk about a lot in the book, this is something that has changed my life. Imagine prioritizing spreading love more. Image how that would feel. Who do you love? Talk about it. Here’s why Holding your journey, experiences, learnings, and failures in isn’t why you lived through them. We go, and grow, through these things so that we help others learn and so that we learn too. Most times we won’t know who needs to hear our message when we share it, just believe that it is needed. The world is designed this way. Everyone has got a beautiful story to tell it is all about how YOU choose to look at yours. Control your self talk. Why? Because your thoughts have the power to attract positive and negative into your life. How you speak to yourself when no one is listening can make or break your day, your attitude and your self-esteem. When you talk to yourself, use the same grace and understanding you would use when talking to a loved one. What is your self-talk like? We all do this. We jump to conclusions. We make assumptions. We overthink possible outcomes of things that have yet to happen. In short, we make up stories in our heads. ☼ These stories hold us back because we fear the worst case scenario. We get down because we fill in the blanks on scenarios when we don’t have the full story. ☼ Think about the stories you have made up in your head. Telling yourself you can’t do something, fearing a conversation because it could go wrong, seeing your significant other (or ex) with someone and assuming the worst, feeling left out and thinking your friends don’t want you around.. the list goes on. ☼ Dealing with anxiety, quieting the stories in my head is something I have to be extra cognizant of. I remind myself that things are always bigger in my mind than they ever will be in reality. I do my best to have these conversations or tackle these obstacles so that I can react to reality rather than emote to the scenarios in my mind. ☼ Challenge yourself to be mindful of the stories you tell yourself. The more you realize it, the more you can control it. ✨

To Own Your Soul is a profound opportunity available to every human. Our truest essence is a soul inhabiting a body. In the past when I’ve forgotten to feed my soul I have felt disconnected, I have had low energy, and felt lost. Today I make sure to feed my soul daily in order to optimize my life. My soul’s nourishment comes in the form of a daily gratitude practice, prayer, meditation, yoga, and vulnerably sharing my story with others. Those are it’s preferred “soul food”. That’s the real soul food, right there y’all. HBU? How do you feed your soul?

We spend so much time and effort building the things in our lives: relationships, careers, homes, ourselves. We are built to seek constant improvement, which is amazing, but if you wait until things are perfect to appreciate them, you will never get the chance. We so often look at all that we want to accomplish and get overwhelmed. In those moments, challenge yourself to look back at how far you have come and appreciate the moment you are in. Take moments to appreciate how far you have come. Take moments to congratulate yourself. Take moments to tell the people around you that you love and appreciate them. Take moments to relax. These moments are so important. Without giving gratitude for where we are, we are just floating through days and weeks, losing time that we won’t get back. Working hard is truly important, but it’s all for nothing if you don’t give yourself the time and permission to enjoy it.

Don’t ever underestimate your rare ability to bring light to someone else’s life. Never forget that you hold the keys to be a part of a story that is much, much bigger than your own personal tale. ✨ MENTAL HEALTH ✨ OwnYourAnxiety book showed up in my life when I needed it the most. I have been feeling overwhelmed by everything going on in my life (health/school/work/home stuff...) which has been leading to more anxieties. And it's OK. The tips offered in this book help you break the anxiety vicious circle taking over your life. I really enjoyed the chapters about mindfulness and having rituals but there is so much more that I could relate to. Leaving your phone out of the bedroom? This has been so helpful for me. My sleep is better, my mood is better and I don't feel rushed to check my phone in the morning, which makes me more efficient! "Organize your life" makes so much sense for me and gives me a sense of control. This book does not only give you valuable tools for your mind and body, but it also demonstrates that anxiety can be a positive thing if you find your ways to OWN it. Have you ever noticed that you repeat the same cycle in your life? It might be changing jobs, changing friends, a relationship or where you live. Before you make the change, you experience an intense period of anxiety or self-isolation. Change in itself isn't a bad thing, I am ALL for shaking things up. But sometimes we change not because we are moving to something positive, but because we are moving away from difficult emotions. Signs that this is you are when you enjoy the newness but you start to feel a little anxious when things are going ‘too well’.. This is definitely something I used to do, and it took some work to understand my triggers and stop the cycle. Isolating yourself might be a way that you cope with intense feelings of rejection. The moment that you feel like you are no longer safe, loved or capable - you retreat to comfort and lose a bit of faith in life. But you are strong. You pick yourself up and MAKE PLANS. It's out with the old and in with the new. It's worked for you in the past but you may be starting to realise that there is something deeper inside that you need to work on. You've noticed a similar trigger that starts the process of isolation each time. Your cycle might actually be holding you back from reaching goals and living the life you really want. Therapy can help to break the cycle and you can start by having a think about these questions. 1. What is your trigger? 2. How many times have you repeated the cycle? 3. What is it that you change? When the topic of mental health comes up in person, I never hesitate to join the conversation or discuss my anxiety medication prescriptions, but I've never really shared too much about that with you guys on here.
