#It's   BiketoWorkDay! Did anyone ride one of these to the office? 😂 This is a high-wheel bicycle from c. 1879 that is featured in our CyclinginNYC exhibition. They became a popular bike in NYC because they could go super fast, but they were actually quite difficult and dangerous to ride. Learn more in our exhibition, open through Oct 6. Cycling was a craze that took over New York City in the late 1800s, transforming some places into heavy bicycle zones, like along Riverside Drive. Going for an evening ride was a chance to socialize and show off, and so New Yorkers adopted this newfound hobby in droves. Bicyclists weren't always welcome in Central Park. Velocipedes, an early form of bicycle, began appearing in Central Park in the late 1860s, but they were soon banned because they were seen as a menace to pedestrians and carriage drivers and an unwelcome disturbance of nature. Cyclists fought back and in 1883 earned the right to ride in Central and Prospect Parks as long as they got licenses from the Parks Department. Then, fast forward 54 years, and cyclists are getting their own lanes in Central Park! New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, best known as a champion of the automobile, actually had areas of the park resurfaced and lines painted on the drive west of Central Park's mall to separate bicyclists and roller skaters, making the park more bike-friendly. 🚲 🌳 🚲 Learn more about the evolution of bicycling in NYC in CyclinginNYC, now on view. __ 📷: Central Park Bicyclists, Courtesy of NYC Parks Photo Archive. @nycparks #BikeNYC

Let us know if you plan to go. “Cycling in the City traces the bike’s transformation of urban transportation and leisure and explores the extraordinary diversity of cycling cultures in the city, past and present.
